One step closer to decarbonisation

Our company is constantly implementing projects to reduce emissions of various kinds, and we are already “injecting” CO2 into our fields in order to prevent emissions into the atmosphere and to increase oil and gas production. To implement projects in this area, the Science and Technology Centre is analysing technologies for CO2 separation, transportation and storage, and there are negotiations with licensors of technologies for carbon dioxide separation from oil refinery units.

Working on the development of this subject, our colleagues from STC wrote the article “CCUS in Serbia - current projects and future trends”. Its authors are Dušan Karas, Product Manager of the New Technologies and Expertise Business Segment, Sergey Fominykh, Director of the Energy Block, and Slavko Nešić, Chief Research and Development Officer of ESG Projects, who presented this paper at the leading CSS Science and Technology Conference in Trondheim.

Over 600 scientists from around the world took part in this year's conference, the 12th, which is one of the largest and best-attended in Europe as well as the world, and our colleagues who presented at it were greatly honored. The aim was to present and discuss the work being undertaken by research institutes, universities, and industries.

-Serbia continues its journey towards decarbonisation of the industry in accordance with the signed international agreements, and when the legal regulations are harmonised with the Emissions Trading System (ETS), it will bring significant financial benefits to our company with the implementation of CCUS. Our company has been investing in CO2 projects for almost a decade. The first CCUS project was launched in 2015 with the construction of the Amine Plant for the separation of CO2 from a mixture of natural gases at the Elemir Gas Processing Plant. The separated CO2 is injected into the Rusanda field to maintain reservoir pressure and enhance oil productivity. The second project is CCUS at the Pančevo Refinery and it was launched in 2022, Slavko says.

Over the course of the conference, our colleagues had the opportunity to exchange views and experiences with representatives of many CSS companies and organisations, as well as to initiate talks with a view to future collaboration.
