Jelena Begović, PhD, Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, visited the NIS Science and Technology Centre (NTC) in Novi Sad today. NIS CEO Kirill Tyurdenev and Leonid Stulov, Head of the Science and Technology Centre, familiarised Dr Begović with the main activities of the NTC, which, among other things, provides scientific and technological support in all stages of oil and gas exploration and production and implements digitisation and innovation development in all business segments of the Company.

Dr Begović was also informed about the Centre’s major projects, plans of IT infrastructure development and implementation of new information technologies and NIS investment in the educational system. Minister Begović visited the geological sample laboratory operating as part of the NTC. In addition, Dr Begović met with young NIS scholars who started their professional career at the NTC after completing their education.

Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation in the Government of the Republic of Serbia underlined the importance of investing in science and education and said NIS was a good example of such a practice.

“Today, I had an opportunity to visit the NIS Science and Technology Centre. Whenever I visit a company’s Research & Development Centre, I can see it is the future of Serbia. This is yet another example of why the science matters and why it is important that we invest in education. Even with products such as petroleum products there is a huge number of people involved investing their minds and talents in something that we will be using some day. NIS invests in people and has been doing so continuously. Not only do people get an excellent opportunity to educate themselves and get a job here, but the Company invests further so they could keep educating themselves while they work and get their PhD and postdoctoral degrees. Developing its people is the only way for a company to develop. That is also the way for our country to develop, having as many companies as possible that can give jobs to smart people, so we could develop together,” Minister Begović said.

NIS CEO Kirill Tyurdenev stated that knowledge is the only thing that can take us further.

“That is why we have employed over 100 young experts at the Science and Technology Centre in the last few years. At same time, we have invested nearly two billion dinars in modern equipment and digitisation for the Centre. We feel that science is more than mere projects and processes, it’s the people in the first place. We are proud of our young engineers, whose knowledge can contribute to research processes on many different levels. We are going to continue making this kind of investment in the future, too. That is the only way for us to achieve our objective – long-term development of NIS and boosting the expertise of our employees and the entire community,” Tyurdenev said.

Leonid Stulov, Head of the Science and Technology Centre, said he takes pride in the fact that out of 398 NTC employees, 282 have university degrees and 16 are pursuing their doctoral studies.

“Our strong performance is the outcome of competence and joint efforts of our employees. People are our company’s greatest assets and the NTC employs many competent and experienced specialists, well versed in how to use modern equipment and technologies and ready to embrace new ideas and gain knowledge,” Stulov said.
